I spent two years in Puerto Rico and couldn’t learn Spanish.  I tried all the traditional methods with books, group classes, grammar exercises, and watching movies in Spanish. The problem was the language I was studying wasn’t the same language that the people were speaking in the streets.

With my low-level Spanish skills, I moved to Spain to both teach and learn. I taught English while studying a master’s degree. I found that once I was able to engage a little in conversation my Spanish improved greatly, though not everyone was patient enough to speak with me on my level. It was hard to keep up with the flow of conversation.
